The video does, to some extent, have me convinced that by altering the eating habits of many nations, whether by providing more food or simply healthier food, illnesses such as heart disease may not exist. The difficult, and seemingly impossible part, however, is getting every single person and government to adopt this practice.
What if we could cure sickness without medicine? When you think about it, it truly is a simple concept. We have to power to prevent such things as heart disease and cancers by making smarter, healthier decisions about what we consume. Nonetheless thinking about something and doing something about it are two different things. It was stated that health care costs could be cut by 70-80% and our nation's health care crisis could be solved...is that not motivation enough? It's a wonderful concept to think about. However the reality of it, as stated above, is the difficulty of advocating this concept to every individual person. One by one we can slowly start to fight preventable diseases ourselves without the influence of medicine.
I think the concept of curing sickness without medicine is possible, however by watching this trailer I am not sure how. I thought this video was very vague and confusing. But by using common sense we can figure out that by eating healthy and exercising regularly we could possibly decrease sickness in society. It is such an easy concept that no one considers because it is not a quick fix and it takes work to do. People feel that it takes too much effort out of their daily lives to stay healthy.
I am defintely interested in seeing this film, they certainly portray this idea of slicing healthcare costs simply by changing diets of Americans. However, I think that reform is going to take a long time to occur, and us as future healthcare professionals may only be able to contribute to the hard part: changing people's diet's. Our children and their children may see the effects...IF this movie promotes such a drastic cultural change that affects the health of Americans, it will be worth the effort we have to put into it.
i feel like this trailer was very vague. i understand their idea of curing sickness without medicine, yes possibly possible. but i feel that what they are proposing is simply eating healthier and exercise and at this point in age that is almost common sense to people. yes people may not know what or how to eat healthy but i feel like that was all these men were proposing. the video not only seemed vague but slightly confusing. i would be interested to see the movie to see if there truly was something else they were proposing and if not how what they propose is different to what common sense we have been given already.
In the world we live in today, and how I have been brought up, it is hard for me to imagine a world without medicine. I think this will be a very interesting film to watch to open my eyes to new ideas and new methods of treatment. It is an important aspect to look both at the scientific research and the clinical applications in order to assure that the method being studied is effective and efficient. I have always known maintaining a healthy lifestyle and a proper diet is important, but I think this film will attempt to take it to the next level, and say that these healthy lifestyles are more helpful to our well-being that we expect. I plan to keep my eye out for this film this coming summer.
Just like watching Supersize Me, shortly after the movie premiered, people were realizing what society and fast food is doing to our lives. I think that once this movie is shown, it could potentially do the same. Yes, curing sickness without medicine is better said than done. Although we are the most advanced in medical technology, we are one of the unhealthiest countries. If we rid of this technology and medicine, then what will happen to the medical companies?
It stated that most debilitating diseases, heart disease, cancer, stroke, to name a few, are all preventable. People are just not aware of what can be done to eliminate such a sickness in our society. How exactly do we cure sickness without medicine? Perhaps through alternative ways, like focusing mainly on diet and eating whole foods and plant-based foods. Word of mouth is truly important when it comes to movies like this, and I think it will be very beneficial in the years to come.
I also feel that I would need to see the whole film to get a better understanding of what they are actually proposing. It seems like the movie is trying to propose and easy fix to the healthcare crisis, but at the end of the day this is one thing that can't be fixed over night. If eating healthy and exercising is the light at the end of tunnel than why has it taken us so long to come up with a solution that has been around society practically forever.
I think that the information in this film could be revolutionary in the way we view nutrition. One of the doctors in the trailer estimates that health care costs could be reduced by 70%, diseases could be reversed and prevented, all without medicine. The whole plant foods diet deserves more attention, and should not be overlooked by our government in order to "preserve the status quo." I like the quote they use on the blog of the website that says that Bill Maher said that the one thing missing from the health care debate is any discussion of health. I think this is completely true, and that we should focus not on how to pay for health cares current astronomical costs, but how to reduce the need for our quick-fix health care system.
There were two very powerful statements in that video. First was the idea that the current generation could be the first generation to actually live a shorter life than their parents. We think that advances in medicine and science are a cure-all; that because we have quick-fixes, any illness we should miraculously come down with will be taken care of and we should, in theory, keep increasing the lifespan of humans through these advances. We think that there is a fountain of youth yet to be discovered, and it IS true that the advent of scientific development – in more areas than just medicine -- has increased human life quality and length; but a lot of that development is the knowledge that there are things that WE can do to make ourselves better. There are ways we can eat and exercise and vitamins; but when we think about the science that will save us, we think of the quick fix – the pills and surgery, the unnatural. Secondly, and overlapping with the first point, is the idea that we can save ourselves. I forget the statistic I have heard before, but the government has put a monetary sum on how much it would cost to insure the entire nation. That sum would theoretically come out of OUR tax dollars. If we were able to prevent chronic illnesses simply by eating right, simply by following the advice of other scientific findings that a certain way of eating is conducive to good health, we could dramatically lower that price sticker.
So basically, the claim of the movie is that the major chronic diseases of our society may be controlled or reversed by rejecting a majority of the populations current diet, which consists of animal products and processed foods. I believe that a larger percentage of the population is beginning to make this connection with unhealthy foods and there negative effects on the body. However, a majority either are not educated about this subject or cannot afford the whole-foods and plant based diet that the trailer suggests. I agree that this new diet may do wonders for the health care field, but its not until these healthier foods are more widely available and affordable that this new plan may be adopted.
I agree with Michelle Z, the trailer starts to open our eyes but we really do not have a grasp of what they are presenting. They could be presenting the idea to eat more plant based foods. Now if they do present this idea and everyone would only eat plant based foods maybe heart disease and other diseases would decline, but we wont know if others would rise. No matter what society does there will always be new diseases that occur that we never thought about. Perhaps diets strictly based on plant based foods will cause everyone to have 12 fingers in the future due to contaminants in our soil today. No one knows the answer to what will come. Yah eating different may lessen one problem but perhaps it will open a whole other can of worms that never donned on anyone.
I think that this movie looks very interesting and raises some key issues, but I just don't see how practical and realistic it is to think for people to change. We live in a very fast-paced world, with processed foods and food high in animal fat are consumed greatly. Many Americans go from working one job directly to working their second shift and the only thing that have time to eat, and the only thing they can afford is the McDonald's dollar menu. I think that it is very important to have people aware of what they are eating, and try to eliminate unhealthy choice, but ultimately I just don't think things will change for a while.
In my opinion, curing disease without medicine comes down to one thing, and this is choice. Our society today is brought up on fast food, unhealthy food. As we saw from the supersize me video, our nation is fat. Is it possible to prevent certain disease without the use of medicine, yes it is. When someone goes to see the Doctor over possible heart disease, not only does the Doctor offer some form of medication, but most of the time they probably tell that person they need to change their lifestyle. So, with a new healthier lifestyle, and some form of medication, they can be on a path to a better life. What if that person made a decision to start being a healthier person before they needed to take medication? I choose what I eat on a daily basis. I choose to go to the gym and exercise. We all make our own decisions. I know there are social structures that play into it, but I believe that at the end of the day, I make the final decision on how I live my life. If I chose to start smoking and eating junk food all the time, I am setting myself up for a short life. I would be choosing the wrong path. So, until our society, and people around the world start choosing and making the right choices, we will result to medicine to better our lives. And the more medicine has to better our lives, the more money it will cost us, and potentially hurt us in the long wrong. We have to make the right decisions. And until we do, curing sickness without medication probably will not happen anytime soon.
The video states that if the simple choice of diet could affect the illnesses of the world. Could serious illnesses such as cancer and heart disease be resolved with simple choices of healthier food. If the world continues down the path we are going now, how high will the rates of deadly diseases get? Only time and life style changes can answer that question.
After doing some more reading about the movie and getting a better understanding of what they are trying to promote, I don't believe it is a bad thing. However, I think there are many ways that this should be handled. Personally I eat meat multiple times a day. Often I will have a sandwich with meat, at dinner I try to have a piece of meat with a potato and veggie. I also don't go overboard though. I try to keep a healthy balance between my meals. I would have to agree with some of the comments by my classmates above that by eliminating all meat from our diet could lead to other health issues. It is true that there have been people who follow a strict vegan diet and have no issues, but the same is also for those who consume meat. My personal thought is that a healthy balance should be maintained that will allow for people to stay healthy. If people are ill and have tried other things, modifying the diet may not be a bad idea.
There is so much evidence that points to "smarter" diets and vegetarian based lifestyles are healthier than those involving intake of large amounts of meat. Even in biology we learn that primary consumers (herbivores) obtain and utilize more energy they ingest then omnivores and carnivores. However, convincing people to change their lifestyle may be a difficult task. There is so much money and business involving the meat industry that I highly doubt there will ever be such a great reform that these men are looking for. But, maybe they can do something about the quality of the food and what we are doing to the animals. For instance, people have been consuming meat for as long as the record can state, but how long have we been consuming animals injected with artificial growth hormones? Upton Sinclair's eye opener "the Jungle" created a great amount of revolt and shock when it brought up the cruelties and the outrageous conditions in meat packing plants and surprisingly we are regressing to even more unheard of conditions. Maybe it's not our diet that's so bad for us, but what's in our diet that is not naturally there.
I agree with Kimberly, that people know they should be eating healthier, but the ability to get access to those healthier foods is not quite so easy. I do not so much focus on meat, however, because I feel that what the "fat" articles talked about was eating foods lower in fats and cholesterol, which meat obviously contains. Therefore, there should be more focus on making fruits and vegetables cheaper and free of pesticides to consumers and to encourage farmers to grow that type of produce and lean away from over-production in meat. Meat should be eaten in moderation and only lean meats. The trailer for the movie I think was left open-ended so people will go see it. If they had the quick answer in the trailer no one would feel the need to see it. I am interested what their "easy answer" is and to analyze whether it really is quite as easy as it is being advertised as.
Can we cure sickness without medicine? I think that it can be done. By getting the word out that people need to eat healthier and exercise at least 20-30 minutes a day at moderate intensities. In this society, today, we have so much going on that supports us in eating unhealthy. For example, portion sizes are huge now. I believe if everyone worked together to teach everyone to adapt a healthier lifestyle that sickness would decrease and we wouldn't need as much medicine or even health care for that matter. In order for this to work though, I think that businesses like restaurants need to help out by preparing smaller food portions, fast food places could find a way to make their menu healthier, and even promote exercise anywhere and everywhere possible. I believe it can be done it would just take everyone to adapt to a different lifestyle than they may be used to.
It is nice to think that we can cure illness without medicine and it is nice to think that it is a simple concept that everyone can follow. It is also nice to think that we can cut health care costs by 70-80%. But making all of this a reality is much harder than we actually give it credit. Getting Americans to change their diets and life decisions ever so slightly can and will be a huge hurdle to climb. We can only hope to start on a small scale and work one by one to help change the we can fight preventable diseases.
I think this a great concept, to treat, even cure illness without medicine. I personally try not to take unneeded medications and opt out on optional vaccinations because I feel no need for it. As mentioned earlier in the class, the increase in 'super viruses' are on the rise and sooner than later if we want to think it, almost all viruses will become resistant to antibiotics and vaccinations.
As Eric mentioned, this concept is good in theory but realistically will not be easy to get Americans to change their diets to try and prevent illness. It is hard enough to change the diets of people who are diagnosed with food allergies and such, how will we get them to look to the future?
It's a great effort to get people to think that maybe we can cure illness without medicine just by changing out diet. There are things though that cannot be rid of without medication liek bacteria or viruses. If we want to change the diet we have to change the food industry. Selling healthier foods at a low cost. Perhaps lowering the need for red meat. By changing our diet we need to change ouir industry and in a country who has a lot of power with money, this might not go so well
I think that if we could cure sickness and chronic disease without medicine, we would be living in the ideal and picture perfect world. The importance of proper diet/nutrition and exercise have ALWAYS been the keys to success when it comes to living a healthier life. The truth is, people still choose not to make the necessary changes and break bad habits that may be causing disease and illness. Making changes to diet/nutrition and activity levels may help decrease how widespread diseases are, but I don't think it is virtually possible to eliminate disease and our reliance on medicine all together.
I feel like it would be great if we could solve things like cardiovascular disease with just changing nutritional habits. They said that it would cut health care costs between 70-80%, this would be HUGE! However, actually implementing the changes would take a lot of work. It would change where the money for food would go. Right now, we pay farmers discounted prices and give subsidies. However, we don't do this for organic food which is more expensive. It would completely change the way that our society is centered around food. But if it would increase lifespan and decrease healthcare costs, it is definitely worth a try.
This clip proposes the idea that we can cure and prevent diseases and improve people's overall health through promoting and providing healthy diets. It is depicted in the clip that one's diet could affect and possibly rid the world of many of its illnesses, including cancer and heart disease. On top of the positive effects this would have on the individual they also said that it would cut health care costs between 70-80%. I feel that even if we improve our diets slightly it would have a positive impact on the economic situation of our country as well as a positive impact on our individual health.
It frustrates me that medicine is promoted so heavily when it could be avoided on the basis that it helps "maintain the status quo." I also get annoyed that everything in our society today seems to only receive validity if it has been empirically proven and shows promising scientific evidence. However, we pretty much create our reality so there is nothing that can be fully unbias. Like this movie trailer basically states, why is medicine so important. Can there be other methods to treat ailments? ...Such as our diets and exercise. I thought this clip did a wonderful job showing that sometimes we need to question or authorities to which we seek knowledge. For instance, in the clip an elderly lady went to the doctor after having her second heart attack and he basically told her that she is old and she needs to start to cool down. However, this idea of the elderly not being able to maintain the speed as everyone else is false. There have been studies that have shown exercise programs for the elderly population to helpincrease certain functional abilities. This contradicts the idea that the elderly need to slow down when there are programs out there that could improve their quality of life, and make them feel like a useful part of society.
this movie clip claimed that we can cure any illness by changing your diet. i come from a background where we did not eat junk food or anything that was precooked. i feel that having different foods to eat and specific times can help regulate your body to allow it to help change the effects of an illness but i do not think it has a huge effect. it might change a little but nothing drastic

ReplyDeleteIt frustrates me that medicine is promoted so heavily when it could be avoided on the basis that it helps "maintain the status quo." I also get annoyed that everything in our society today seems to only receive validity if it has been empirically proven and shows promising scientific evidence.
ReplyDeletethis movie clip claimed that we can cure any illness by changing your diet. i come from a background where we did not eat junk food or anything that was precooked. i feel that having different foods to eat and specific times can help regulate your body to allow it to help change the effects of an illness but i do not think it has a huge effect. it might change a little but nothing drastic
